Vote #NOLB969.
Nebraska lawmakers have a bill in process to wrest control of all libraries from communities and to put it in the hands of City Mayors and City Councils.

No joke. No foolin' around. The screen shot shows the last two major impacts of this proposed bill.

I wonder if our watchers @ALALinrary are poised for action too.

PLAN22 presenting 90 minute Workshop at #OLASC16 -Toronto 27Jan'16

Slide31_RCLSWkShp_redo for OLASC16PLAN22 Workshop:Shaping the Outcome of Your Library- Communicating Effectively with Design Professionals

Library building projects are very time consuming, expensive and one of the most difficult tasks faced by any librarian.  ‘Getting it right’ is critical.

The Library Building Program is an essential document used to communicate all of your library’s unique requirements to many interested people including your architect/design professional.

Effectively and comprehensively describing the functional requirements for your library building will increase the probability that your building will serve the needs of both the staff and public. It helps to assure that your project will be a success.

This workshop provides participants with an overview of the process inherent in creating your Building Program.

The 90 minute workshop will provide an overview of this complex and exacting subject. It will give librarians a better understanding of what information and data they will need to gather and help them to structure this information in order to effectively communicate with all concerned parties.

Learning Outcomes

  • Participants will:
  • Understand the value and importance of the building program.
  • Know the elements that comprise a building program.
  • Understand the critical data gathering required to complete a building program.

Researchers have made cheap, strong concrete out of “Martian” soil|MIT

Martianconcrete
cred: MIT TechRev

"...once humans arrive on the red planet, they will require high quality buildings in which to live and work...The first colonizers will quickly have to find a way to build structures using the planet’s own resources. But how?

The key material in a Martian construction boom will be sulphur, says the Northwestern team. The basic idea is to heat sulphur to about 240 °C so that it becomes liquid, mix it with Martian soil, which acts as an aggregate, and then let it cool. The sulphur solidifies, binding the aggregate and creating concrete. Voila—Martian concrete."

Libraries: better investment than gold|Australian Library&Information Association

The ROI for the services provided to the 47 libraries in the co-operative Ramapo Catskill Library System, where ‎Robert is Executive Director, is $4.54. Not bad. We see investment in libraries as gold in the bank too.

Good on ya Australian Libraries and library staff. Nice study and good evidence based reporting. Libraries and those who work in them really are invaluable and their worth nearly incalculable.

FTC warns...‘big data’ comes with the potential for big problem|Washington Post

Most people we talk to think they understand that "our governments" are the greatest threat to our privacy and the way the data about our lives can effect our futures.

Not necessarily. If you think governments are a threat to your privacy, add the avarice of our commercial economy corporations to the mix and be rightly afraid.

Canadians' growing concerns over cyber surveillance|CBC News

Canadians are waking up.
That our communications, by wire and now over modern communications modes, are being monitored is not news. Canada operates one of the most sophisticated communications surveillance operations in the world; it helped the Allied Forces win WWll.

What is increasingly making news is that ‎the civilian population is becoming more aware of how we maintain intelligence in peace time and in war and how it affects us all.

Nothing costs nothing. We all pay a price for democracy. The conversation we are now having more 'openly' is how much we are willing to pay and how much is 'too much'.‎
